Profile:

Growing up near Houston, Texas, many childhood hours were spent lying on the floor drawing horses, airplanes, trains, cars and all the other things that capture a boy's fancy.  After high school and a couple of years of college, I spent two years at the Art Center School in Los Angeles (now called the Art Center College of Design) with the goal of becoming an illustrator.  However, a four-year stint in the Navy and a marriage contributed to a change of direction.  Now, after seven years as a photographer and twenty-eight years in the computer business, I've returned to my first love - painting.

Painting the California Coast, July '99

Landscapes, still lifes and figures done in oil constitute the bulk of my work.  In addition to the contemporary painters with whom I've studied, influences include John Singer Sargent, some of the early California impressionists and illustrators such as Howard Pyle, Harvey Dunn and Dean Cornwell.

Although I appreciate many  kinds of art, my chosen vehicle of expression is realism because painting is the communication of visual ideas, emotions and feelings -- the artist's very personal reaction to the visible world.  Effectively sharing those feelings requires the use of a visual language common to both the artist and the viewer.

My wife Kathy and I live in Lufkin, Texas, but I often travel to paint the landscapes of Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, California and elsewhere in the U. S.  Time between trips is spent creating studio landscapes from plein air studies, painting still lifes, portraits and figures, as well as landscapes of East Texas.
